An estimated 373 000 people from all over the world, are said to be arriving in South Africa for the Soccer World Cup over the next few weeks. And being one of the host cities, Johannesburg is set on putting its best and cleanest foot forward.
In this spirit, Pikit Up, one of the country’s leading waste management companies, has introduced a Clean Up Campaign. This campaign aims to clean up the city of Johannesburg for the soccer event and its visitors. Last year this campaign drew thousands of willing participants from the Gauteng province. More than 6,000 people from the city of Johannesburg and surrounding areas are expected to roll up their sleeves and volunteer in this year’s Clean Up Campaign on 5th June.
“I would like to encourage people to promote healthy living by keeping their surroundings clean at all times,” said Marks Maponyane, an ambassador of the campaign. Pikit Up plans to eliminate more than 1150 illegal dumping sites in the near future and urges the public to report all illegal dumping sites to their nearest municipal offices. “To support this initiative, make sure that your surroundings are clean and you give your support in the 5th of June. There are no specific areas targeted, but wherever you see the need to clean up, do your part and keep your city or location clean,” concluded Christine Walters, Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC).
