How did you spend your 67 minutes on Mandela day?

Universal News spent 67 minutes at Ethembeni Home in celebration of Mandela Day. The United Nations General Assembly declared 18th July as International Nelson Mandela Day. The day will be marked every year for humanitarian action in celebration of Mr Mandela’s life and legacy. This day has been set aside for each and every person to make their contribution to changing the world through action.

Many people around the country spent their 67 minutes to honour Mandela who has spent 67 years serving his fellow man and made the world a better place. Part of Nelson Mandela’s day, the Universal News team visited children at Ethembeni Children’s Orphanage on 19th July.

Nelson Mandela Day is a global initiative proposed by the 46664 campaign and the Nelson Mandela Foundation as a day to honour and celebrate Nelson Mandela and his legacy.

The day serves as a global call to action for people to “recognise their individual power to make mark and change the world around them for the better”

Ethembeni Orphanage is home to new born babies and toddlers up to the age of 4 years.

At the time of our visit the orphanage had 57 children. A few of the babies are brought by the parents who cannot take care of them, but many are abandoned children from the streets.

“The children really need love,” said Mr Rinze who is an administrator at the orphanage.

Anyone who would like to visit the children at the orphanage is welcome to do so and can contact Liz or Rinze Kamminga at (011) 402-8101.

Mr Mandela celebrated his 92nd birthday on Sunday and South Africans honoured his legacy.
