The Help Centre work together with the UYG on another door-to-door campaign

On the 12th September, the Stop suffering Help Centre (SSHC) conducted yet another “stop HIV/ AIDS” campaign in Alexandra to continue with the war against this pandemic.  This was the second campaign this year where condoms were distributed to the people of the community.

alexMore than 150 Volunteers together with the members of the Universal Youth Group gathered at the Alexandra church to be part of this door-to door campaign.  Pr Saul begin the campaign by explaining to the people that the campaign is not only to bring people to Church but people should remember to give others life through the teachings and awareness that the SSHC conducts ,and to let go of the fears of being open about their status if they are HIV positive.

He added by saying: “The church is not only a spiritual home for those who need help but it is also there to give love and care to those who have lost the courage of living. Spiritual guidance alone is not enough people need to be shown concern; they need encouragement and to be led in a positive path for them to live a longer positive life.”

180 000 condoms were given to people throughout the community of Alexandra .The volunteers targeted taxi ranks and informal settlements around the area. Even though they may have reached as many people and families as they could, there is still a great number of people who are ashamed when it comes to talking about AIDS and the usage of protection.

To add to their growth, the SSHC is planning on starting a support structure for HIV/AIDS for the Church as there are still people inside the house of God, who are not well informed when it comes to HIV and knowing their status. The department of Health together with the SSHC will be conducting an HIV/AIDS course that will take place on the 5th of October for two weeks, this is to teach people more and shed some light in regards to HIV/AIDS.

Positive thinking leads to a longer life style regardless of whether you are infected by this pandemic. The people were happy with the assistance they received from the volunteers of the Church as they also learnt a lot when it comes to being aware of their status.
