UCKG Youth Blood Drive – 11 June 2011

Taking the lead and setting an example for their elders, young people from the UCKG will be donating blood to help save lives on Saturday, 11th June in the JHB CBD.

Youth Lead by Example

Since June is the month which marks World Blood Donor Day on the 14th and Youth Day on the 16th, the church’s Youth Group has taken the initiative to call on young people – between 16 and 30 years – to give blood throughout the country. Working with the South African National Blood Services (SANBS), the church is encouraging as many young people as possible to ensure South Africa has sufficient safe blood for all emergencies.

Young people represent the future of the country and those who become regular blood donors are committed to leading sexually safe lifestyles. To donate blood, people must be healthy, between the ages of 16 and 65 and weigh more than 50kg. Each unit of blood donated can save three lives and regular donors can donate a unit four times each year.

SANBS will set up a mobile blood collection centre at the church’s premises on Saturday, 11th June.

“Blood is the most precious gift you can give to another person, and it costs you nothing except a little time. One day someone in your family may need a blood transfusion. Without available blood, your loved one may die. At UCKG we believe that we have a responsibility to help save lives through donating blood,” said Nametso Mofokeng, public relations officer for UCKG.

The UCKG is committed to helping people in every area of life. “We offer a 24 hour helpline to counsel and assist all in need. We run regular HIV/Aids awareness drives and distribute thousands of condoms every month. Our church is open seven days a week. We run numerous outreach initiatives including a soup kitchen and feeding schemes. We visit people in hospitals and prisoners in correctional facilities. The UCKG cares about people and is committed to making a difference and helping to transform people’s lives. We hope this blood collection will help save the lives of our fellow South Africans,” said Nametso.
