Johanna grew up facing many financial difficulties. Her parents struggled to make ends meet and could not give her what she wanted as a young person.
She told herself that one day she would be independent and have a better life. Johanna decided to study further and chose social work as her profession.
After finishing her matric, she won a scholarship to continue her studies. Despite qualifying as a social worker, she could not find a job for almost three years.
“It was humiliating for me to have a qualification as a social worker but not be permanently employed and still dependent on others,”she said. She told Universal News that she felt “small and inadequate” because she was not earning a living. Her hoped-for dignity, confidence and independence still escaped her and she found the situation frustrating.
“I had to depend once again on my mother and sister for financial support. At times I had to look for other ways to make money and even started styling people’s hair to earn something,” she said. Johanna’s mother saw her battle and invited her to the Church.“In the Church I learned that nothing is impossible for God. I did not want to struggle any more,”said Johanna.
Finally, after three years of unemployment, Johanna saw the power of God and found her first permanent job this year. She’s now independent, dignified and confident.
